Free pregancy yoga classes could become available for women in Angus if a lottery application by MUMs (Maternity Users Montrose) is successful.
MUMs has applied to the National Lottery Awards for All programme for a grant to run pregnancy yoga classes for all women free of charge. Access to such classes usually depends on ability to pay, so many women who would benefit may be excluded.
Pregnancy is a great time to practise yoga, as it keeps the body and mind healthy. The breathing and relaxation helps to keep the focus on natural birth. Pregnancy yoga classes look at positions women can use during labour and at birth to ease pain and tension. Practising yoga in pregnancy can reduce the backache, pelvic pain, heartburn and tiredness which can be experienced at this time. Importantly, it can also improve your general health and fitness, which is good news for your recovery after your baby is born.
The weekly classes would be run by a qualified Yogabirth teacher. They would include yoga, birth preparation and an informal chat with refreshments. Guest speakers may include midwives, homeopathy practitioners and specialists on the use of hypnosis during labour. Local mums would also be on hand to tell their birth story, talk about life with a newborn or raise awareness of postnatal facilities such as baby and toddler groups.
MUMs will hear in March if there application has been successful. Further information in the meantime is available from Vicki Cracknell or Emily Miscioscia.
