Seven members of staff from Arbroath Maternity Unit have raised at least £1100 for Cancer Research UK after taking part in the 5km Race for Life event at Camperdown Park in Dundee on Sunday.
Chris, Fiona, Lorna, Lorraine, Val, Wendy and Wilma arrived at a very sunny Camperdown along with 3000 other participants, most wearing shades of pink or fancy dress. Cancer Research UK researches effective methods to detect and treat cancer, particularly in its early stages. The unit decided to participate because Lorraine, one of the auxilliaries, has had her own personal battle with breast cancer since she was diagnosed in April 2009.
Six of the women walked the course but, after several months of training, Fiona was delighted to run all 5km (3 miles) in 30 minutes without stopping! Fiona says to watch this space to see if she decides to go for the 10km next year, adding, "Going round the course it is inspiring and sad when reading the 'I race for life for...' signs on everyone's backs, and it really hits home how many lives - young and old - are affected by this disease."
At the end all the women received a medal and goody bag for their efforts. They would like to thank Reids Taxis of Arbroath for their generosity, as Mr Reid donated the women's return fare to Race for Life and driver Mal Beaton donated his tip.
