Keep MUM is back

The Keep MUM (a maternity unit in Montrose) campaign has been reinstated following speculation that the award-winning service may again be under threat.

The MUMs (Maternity Users Montrose) group decided to take action following the news that NHS Tayside has started a review of Arbroath Maternity Unit. Birth in Angus understands that this is the first part of a wider review of maternity service across Angus.

People joining the Keep MUM group on facebook have been posting their reasons why the Montrose service is important. Laura Simmons said, "I had my son at Montrose and it was AMAZING!!! The staff were caring and really enabled me to feel empowered. They gave me total confidence that my body could do what was expected of it!" Sarah Clark said, "The unit is essential to our local community - I couldn't imagine life without it, that would be like going backwards."

Keep MUM campaigned successfully on behalf of Montrose 10 years ago during the Tayside Acute Services Review, and the unit has since gone from strength to strength. There was disappointment earlier this year when the planned move to a new facility was suspended due to financial constraints. The MUMs group has fundraised for improvements to the existing unit and has introduced initiatives such as yogabirthing and a twins and multiples group to complement the work of the midwives.
