Call for cross party meeting

The Courier is reporting today that Councillor Mark Salmond is calling for a cross party meeting of local politicians after the summer holidays to "discuss how they can work together to secure funding for the new Montrose unit."

In the report, Councillor Salmond refers to the existing unit's "worldwide reputation for the quality of service and care it provides to mums from this area and much further afield."

It says he wants the non-party political group to lobby the UK and Scottish Governments to ensure NHS Tayside can meet its "cast iron commitment" to building a new maternity unit in the town when funds become available. Councillor Salmond said both Susan Wilson (general manager of Angus Community Health Partnership) and Gerry Marr of NHS Tayside recently reaffirmed this guarantee.

Since the Keep MUM (a Maternity Unit in Montrose) campaign was first launched 10 years ago, there has been strong support across all political parties at council and parliamentary level for the ongoing efforts by midwives and service users to show what small community midwife-led units can achieve.
