Twenty eight babies were born at Montrose Maternity Unit in July, making it the busiest month on record.
The unit has had 132 births so far this year, 80 per cent of them in water, and 50 per cent having a physiological third stage. The number of women needing to be transferred in labour to a consultant unit remains very low, at 7 per cent. In 2007 the total number of births was 215, the highest ever.
As part of their service to support women in preparing for a straightforward birth, the midwives have introduced regular relaxation sessions on a Friday from 2-3pm. This costs £1 and all pregnant women are welcome to attend whatever their stage of pregnancy.
