Montrose was represented at the recent 9th Interdisciplinarary Research Conference in Dublin at the beginning of the month.
Midwife Clare Winter was presenting findings from a comparative study detailing outcomes for women who chose an independent midwife versus NHS care. Clare (who as well as being one of the Montrose team is also a lecturer at Dundee University) was presenting with fellow lecturer Andrew Symon. Clare and Andrew conducted the research for The Independent Midwives Association.
Trinity College hosted the event which was attended by health care professionals from around the world. Since there were 9 concurrent sessions per half hour they could not get round them all but the ones they saw regarding maternity services ranged from harrowing to inspiring. Access to community services in rural Ireland is sparse and many women travel over 100 miles to see a midwife. It certainly allows us to see how well we are provided for in Tayside with our (nearly) 4 community maternity units! With a strong influence from the Church laws differ greatly from Scotland and some presentations reflected this.
A huge thank you to the team in Dublin for a wonderful welcome and we look forward to contributing again next year.
In the meantime Clare has popped over to Quebec to give the presentation again this week!
