Step 4

When it comes to tests, we make sure you know you have a choice and support your decision.

Screening and diagnostic tests in pregnancy can include ultrasound scanning, blood tests for full blood count, blood group, hepatitis B, elisa, rubella, optional HIV and Down’s syndrome screening with amniocentesis only being offered if appropriate.

Generally, people think that tests must be a good idea because they will provide reassurance that everything is OK or let them know that something is wrong.  People also usually assume that they will only be offered a test if it is necessary, and that the tests themselves are completely safe. If only it was so simple!

We discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives of each procedure with you – as well as what will happen if you do nothing. (To make full use of this approach, see Sara Wickham’s book ‘What’s right for me? Making Decisions in Pregnancy and Birth,  In the end it is your choice - whatever decision you make, we will support you.
