Supervisors of midwives are experienced, practising midwives who have additional training. Their role – and indeed legal responsibility - is to protect the public. They offer guidance and information about the right type of care for you, and support you in getting it.
They do this in two ways.
Firstly, they monitor the practice of midwives to make sure you and your baby receive good quality, safe care. All midwives have regular meetings with their supervisor to encourage them to think constantly about how they can improve the service they are providing.
Secondly, although all midwives aim to help women choose and get the best maternity care for them, we don’t always get it right. If you feel your options are not being well explained or that your wishes are not being respected, you can get in touch with a Supervisor of Midwives day or night. As well as listening to your story and providing information about the benefits and risks of different choices and any alternatives, the supervisor can if necessary give you information about the complaints procedure.
There are two supervisors of midwives in Angus. We welcome any ideas for improvements in our service. If you would like to get in touch with us, please call 01674 623402. Should you prefer to talk to another supervisor, contact the North of Scotland LSA Midwifery Officer, and she will put you in touch with an alternative supervisor in Tayside.
