Making sure that you have all the information you need regarding labour and birth will give you the confidence to make decisions which suit you. Your midwife is there at all times to answer your questions and to advise and support you - and will strive to make sure you are ready for your labour.
It is quite normal to have mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension, especially if you are expecting your first baby. Try to keep a balanced view of all the birth stories that you hear, and pay most attention to the people who make you feel confident, happy and relaxed.
If things don't go exactly to plan your midwife will discuss alternative options, at all times ensuring the health and safety of you and your baby. But remember that your body has managed to grow your baby and get you to this stage, so have confidence that it will also manage to finish the job.
