We encourage you to have unlimited, uninterrupted private time with your baby. Having your baby tucked in beside you keeps them cosy, regulates their heartbeat and helps you to get to know each other. Now is the time to get breastfeeding off to a good start.
When you are both ready you will be offered vitamin K for your baby. Your midwife will offer to weigh and measure your baby and to carry out a top to tail examination. This can be done right beside you and there is no reason that you need be seperated. The following day a thorough examination will be offered.
In the early hours your baby may sleep for long periods of time. This is quite normal and babies are born with enough brown fat to keep them warm until they are ready to feed. Regular skin to skin contact will encourage them to start to root at the breast. When they are ready they will feed and if you need extra help your midwife will be there for you. Don't worry what the women and babies round about are doing - every mum and every baby is a unique team.
Remember you need to keep yourself well fed and well hydrated so bring in some tasty snacks and drinks for after the birth. Breastfeeding uses up extra calories so you will need more nourishment than normal.
We want you to feel comfortable and content after your birth, so let your midwife know if you have any wishes, questions or worries.
